After the painting estimate, what happens next?  Well, you may have gotten more than one estimate, so the first thing to remember is cheaper is not always better.  Sit down and look over the estimates you have received, but don’t just look at price.  Here are some things to know before you make a final decision and what to expect from your painters and how to make your final choice.

HOW DID THE MEETING GO?

You may eliminate or decide on a painting company before you even get to the bottom line of the estimate.  Ask yourself the following questions about the companies giving the estimates:

  • Was the representative prompt when they came to give the estimate? (In all fairness, sometimes things come up, but did they call and were they courteous in trying to reschedule?)
  • During the meeting, did you feel comfortable explaining your project?
  • Did you feel like the representative listened to you and developed a rapport?
  • Did the representative spend time looking at the project, taking measurements and ask questions (if needed)?
Tips for evaluating andestimate

Your estimate should be transparent.

GETTING THE ESTIMATE

Once the representative has all of the necessary information you should:

  • Receive the estimate in 2 – 3 days.
  • Make sure the estimate should includes materials and labor associated with the scope of the project.
  • Call the rep if you have any questions that need to be clarified

AFTER THE PAINTING ESTIMATE – CHOOSING THE RIGHT COMPANY

You have your estimates and it is time to choose.  Three factors should be considered.

  • Did you go to the company’s website (Google Business Page) and look at reviews?
  • Did you receive the estimate promptly?
  • Do you feel comfortable that the representative understands your project?

SCHEDULING THE PAINT PROJECT

Now you are ready to get down to business.  Call the rep and set up a time and date to go over the estimate, sign the contract and get on the schedule.  You will most likely be asked to make a deposit of approximately 25% to cover the cost of materials and to ask the painters to block off time in their schedule.  Most painters are scheduled 3 – 4 weeks out, but this depends on the time of year.  During peak painting season (may, June, July) it may take a little longer.  Also, if there are rainy or freezing days prior to your project, this may cause a delay in customer projects scheduled prior to yours.

Be sure that you have chosen the colors and paint finishes that you desire for each area.  This will allow the painters to get the materials before the scheduled date and they will come prepared to get to work on day one.

DURING THE PROJECT

Homeowners may be a little nervous during the painting project.  That is normal, but remember – the project is not over until it is complete and you have done a final walk-around with the representative.  You may be looking at something that needs two coats of paint and only one could be complete in a day.  Likewise, paint that is not dry can look spotty and irregular.  It is fine to ask questions, but try not to impede the project.
