Evaluating and comparing estimates can be confusing.  You are ready to paint the interior or exterior of your home.  That is a big investment and you don’t want to get it wrong.  Here are some tips and guidelines you should know when you begin contacting painting companies for estimates.

MEET IN PERSON

In order to get a reliable estimate you must meet the contractor in person.  This gives you an opportunity to discuss your project, get a feel for their professionalism, and make sure you feel comfortable working with them. You will also want to do the initial walk-through to explain your vision and then give the contractor a chance to “re-walk” the project and look at the details.  This is step one in evaluating and comparing estimates and a step you don’t want to miss.

Never accept an estimate over the phone from someone who has not seen your project. This leaves you open to misinterpretation and the possibility of getting an incomplete estimate.  It may seem easy and convenient, but may lead to surprises down the road.

EVALUATION

A reputable contractor will spend time looking at every aspect of the project.  You should ask them questions and they should ask you questions.  Estimates should not be based solely on square footage – that is not a reliable method.  Your project may require special attention to trim work, ceilings or drywall repair.  Extra prep work may be necessary, bushes may need to be trimmed away from your exterior and other considerations.  Estimating requires specialized knowledge to make sure the project results in your complete satisfaction.

Tips for evaluating and estimate

Your estimate should be transparent.

PRICING

Everyone wants to get the best price possible, but beware of a price that seems to good to be true because it probably is.  It could mean that the contractor is cutting corners by using low quality paints and materials. Maybe they are not properly licensed and insured or they may be working a number of jobs at the same time and you will be left hanging for several weeks as they squeeze you in.  You can read more in our blog post Getting What You Pay For.

TRANSPARENCY

Prior to signing the estimate you should discuss the paint type and quality and any other details that should be included in the estimate.  The estimate should list all of the items to be included in your project. Ask questions.  Be sure that you agree with the items to be covered.  If you add on other items (paint the trim, paint a door, change colors, etc.) as the project progresses be prepared to pay more than the original estimate.

Finally, you should be comfortable with all aspects of the process and the final estimate.  Remember, besides the actual painting you want to be sure that the professionals you hire are licensed and insured, trustworthy, prompt and dependable.  A reputable company will want to be sure you are satisfied!
