Why paint your garage?  Your garage is probably on of the most useful areas of your house.  It is also one of the most used.  Think about how many times a day you go to or pass through your garage.  It is not only used for your vehicles, but also tools, lawn equipment, sports equipment, toys and anything else that may not have a home inside!  You may also use it for entertaining like outdoor picnics for the kids, tv watching, game room, arts and craft… the possibilities are endless.

But garages are also the least likely areas to be painted.  That’s a shame because a fresh coat of paint will not only make your garage look nicer, it also protects the walls from wear and tear and weather!

What are the considerations?

Painting the garage is like painting any other room in your house.  Move objects away from the walls, repair any nicks or holes in the drywall, tape (if needed), drape and paint.  But why?

Mold and Mildew

Moisture has a way of getting into every garage.  You may be working in your garage with the door open on a rainy day.  Or any time you drive a wet vehicle in or put up a wet lawn mower moisture enters your garage.  It may seem like no big deal, but walls, especially unprotected walls, absorb moisture.  Over time, this creates problems in your garage.

Temperature flutuations

Most garages aren’t temperature controlled.  Temperature fluctuation causes the layer of paint to expand and contract.  This causes the paint to pull away from the supporting surface and/or crack in places.

Aesthetics

It just makes sense to invest in every area of your home.  It is your biggest asset, so no money spent on it is wasted.  Cleaning and painting your garage also provides extra living space.  So, while your at it, create some areas you can actually use.      Click here for some great ideas.

What kind of paint is needed?

This is an area where you might what a high quality paint that is mildew resistant, like you might use in a bathroom.  If the walls are relatively clean you can use one coat of paint with a built in primer.  If walls are dirty or scoffed it may be wise to prime first with a high quality primer.  That will cover stains and provide a smoot surface for the paint.

It is best to steer away from a matte/flat finish or high gloss paint.  Matte/flat is the least durable and least washable.  High gloss shows all imperfections in the wall.  Best to choose an eggshell or satin.  The professional painters at ColaTown Painting will help you make the right choice.
