One thing you want to take into account as you get ready to repaint the interior of your home is whether or not you want to create an accent wall.  Don’t limit your accent wall choices to your living area.  They look great in a dining room, your bedrooms or even the playroom. An accent wall will not only add color, but interest and creativity as well.  If you have never done an accent wall, here are some tips for you before you make that final decision!

Get Inspired

TIP # 1 – How to choose the best wall…The general rule of thumb is to choose the wall to which the eye is naturally drawn.  That could be a wall with a fireplace or other architectural element, a gallery wall or the wall behind your headboard.

If possible, there should not be any doors or windows (unless there is a bay or nook area) and the wall should not be long and narrow.  If you are having trouble coming up with a true focal point, don’t forget about the “fifth” wall – the ceiling. Adding color overhead can be a dramatic statement, too. Walk through your room several times and imagine color on each wall.  Which one seems to jump out?

An accent point can create a great focal point for your room.

Color Choices

TIP # 2 – Color choices for your accent wall…At one time vivid colors were all the rage for an accent wall, but nowadays muted colors are taking the forefront. Muted colors are the opposite of vivid colors and are colors that have been “grayed” or dulled.

Get inspiration for your color choice from items already in your room or if you are doing a total re-do and the skies the limit, think about colors you love. Create a palette by visiting your local paint store and check out their paint strips or color schemes that have already been curated for you.

After looking over possible choices, if vivid colors are really you – then we say go for it! They make a great statement. Note: Ask to borrow the “color fan” and peruse the hundreds of colors available at Sherwin Williams in the comfort of your own home!

TIP # 3 – Color choices for the rest of your room…Because the accent wall is the focal point of the room, painting the other walls in a neutral color so that they don’t compete will enhance and compliment the effect you are going for. Select something in gray, white, beige or even greige depending on your original choice for the accent wall.

A good rule of thumb is to paint your accent wall one to two shades darker than your other walls  Also, you can create continuity and interest in your color choices by adding pops of your color palette in pillows, rugs and decorative elements.

Wrap It Up

TIP # 4 – Be fearless…Plan out your accent wall and colors your way because everyone has different ideas of what is beautiful. Instead of relying solely on paint chips, you can always get small “sample” containers from your local paint store to try out colors before you actually begin the project.

TIP # 5 –  Finally…Don’t limit yourself to the idea of simply painting one wall with a pop of color.  If you really want to paint all your walls the same color you still have choices.  You can select a large piece of artwork or design a gallery of art work to create a focal point on your wall. Maybe you would love to hang a single large mirror that reflects the other color in the room.  What about some floating shelves that allow you to display objects and books that you treasure?

Remember, your home is where you spend most of your time with friends and family.  Have fun with your new design – you won’t be sorry.
