Need some home improvement tips to help begin feathering your nest? Somehow home ownership wakes up the creativity in us. If you are getting ready to start on some home improvement projects, let us help you get going in the right direction.
START WITH A PLAN
Before you make any changes you need to give thought to exactly what you want to accomplish. Your starting point should outline what results you want, how much money you want to spend, and how much time you want to invest. Write down your expectations even if your budget is limited. Now, put the items in order in case you run out of money before you run out of list!
ADD VALUE WHEN POSSIBLE
As you begin to put your list in order you should also consider which of your projects might add value to your property. Your improvement plan may simply be some redecorating ideas like new furniture and curtains, installing a shiplap wall or adding an accent wall, or hanging new light fixtures. Great place to start. But if you have bigger ideas…exterior/interior painting, adding a deck, remodeling a kitchen or bath…and you have the budget, down the road these things can make a big impact on the resale value of your home. Buyer preferences vary from market to market, so be sure to keep that in mind.
WHAT IS YOUR DIY THRESHOLD?
If DIY is your thing then you will be tempted to start projects yourself. First, gauge your interest level in the project and ask yourself if you are really willing to put in the time it will take to complete the project. Is it worth the money you will be saving? Some projects are best left to the professionals who have the time, equipment and expertise to get the job done with no hassle to you. Remember, just because you can doesn’t necessarily mean you should.
However, if you are up to the task and want/need to save the money, spend a little time doing your research, making a plan and timeline and gathering supplies and tools. The best part of DIY is the pride you feel at the end of a job well done.
