Choosing deck and dock stains can be a little confusing because there is so much out there.  Determining what type of stain to use depends on the look you want for your deck or dock. However, the condition of the deck or dock will also play a major role.

The average size of a deck is 300-400 square feet,  Docks can have even more wood surface depending on the length of the dock and the side rails.  That is a lot of wood to protect.  Let’s walk through some of the choices to help you get just the right stain/coverage for your home deck or dock.

DIFFERENT COVERAGES

The first decision you need to make in choosing deck and dock stains is the type of coverage you want.  There are four main types, so let’s break it down.

  • Transparent – Transparent stains allow the natural beauty of the wood to shine through.  It can be clear or tinted.  This is a good choice for new wood because a transparent stain does not hide stains or imperfections that occur as wood ages. This is the best option for homeowners that want the look of a natural deck.
  • Semi-transparent – A semi-transparent stain provides some coverage, but still allows the beauty of the wood grain to show.  There are a lot more color options available in semi-transparent and because of the increased pigment it gives more protection.  In addition, semi-transparent deck stains require less frequent application.  This is a good option for decks/docks that have already been stained.  It will help revive the color and beauty of the wood.
  • Semi-solid – Semi-solid stains are a good choice for decks/docks that are older and have stains and imperfections from the years of use.  You still see some of the wood grain, but it will help hide the wear and tear.  There are also wide variety of colors to choose from.  Also, semi-solid stains add an extra layer of protection from the sun and the elements.
  • Solid  – A solid stain is a good choice for decks/docks that are really showing their age and need to be heavily protected.  Solid stains do not allow the wood grain to show through.  Actually, it is more like painting than staining your the deck/dock.  Once you have used a solid stain it will not allow you to use any other type of stain afterwards.  Solid stains can suffer from cracking or peeling over time This is especially true with sustained exposure to sun and the elements. On the upside, it is easier to clean, it can be used over other stains and paints and it comes in a wide variety of colors.

COLOR SELECTIONS

Transparent stains can be tinted, but are generally limited to natural wood colors.  Once you move on to stains with more coverages the options vary widely and so there is a lot more to consider.

How to choose a color stain for your project? The best way to choose is select two or three colors and test them on the wood in an area that is hidden away.  Wait until the stain dries completely before making a final decision.

Considerations for your choice should include:

  • The natural color of the wood and its undertones.  Do you want to hide it or enhance it?
  • The grain of the wood.  The grain pattern becomes enhanced as it is stained.
  • The age of the wood.  If it is new or almost new you can choose a lighter stain.  If it has aged and has imperfections, you may want to go darker.
  • The color of your home.  If your home is a light gray, you may want to consider a dark gray – or vice versa!

NOTE:  Keep in mind that the condition of your deck or dock will influence the actual resulting coloring and final product.

WRAPPING IT UP

Decks and docks should be stained every 3-5 years.  If you are vigilant about maintaining your deck/dock it will remain an asset for you and your family to enjoy each year.  Although it is not inexpensive to have your deck/dock pressure washed and stained, much bigger costs begin when you have to tear out and replace boards and railings.

As a general rule, it is best to stain your deck/dock when temperatures are cooler, usually spring or fall.  Also, as temperatures warm up you will be using your deck/dock more often to entertain and enjoy the outdoors.  Allow 3 – 5 days for your area to be pressure washed, dry out, stained and dry out again before use.
