I recently ran into a friend from high school that I haven’t seen in a while.  Inevitably the question of “What are you doing now?” came up.  When I told him I was in the house painting business he immediately rolled his eyes and said, “I wish I would have talked to you six months ago”.  He proceeded to tell me a story about “getting what you pay for.”  He got three quotes and, like many homeowners, went with the least expensive.  A lot times that does work out, but there are also a lot of things to consider when you are spending your hard-earned money on a big project like painting the interior or exterior of your home. It pays to think about exactly what you are looking for when hiring professional  painters to help you reach your goals.

Not Getting What You Pay For

What can go wrong?  There are a number of ways that some painters use to trim their costs at your expense, so beware. Here is a quick list of “short cuts” some painters use to boost their bottom line.

Cheap Paint

The cost of paint can run from $20 a gallon up to $100+.  As with most things, the cost is directly related to the quality of the product.  Of course, there are a few other factors.  Flat paint is cheaper than high-gloss. Paint with primer or mildew inhibitors will be more expensive. Make sure that you ask questions about where the painter gets their paint and the quality of the paint selected.  A true professional will make sure you are happy with the brand and quality of paint to be purchased.  You should ask for any leftover paint.

Prep Work

Furniture needs to be moved, sheeting needs to be laid to protect floors and furniture, cracks or dings in the dry wall need to be patched.  All of this takes time and time is money.  Some painters think they are too professional to spend much time on these issues, but they are critical to a getting a great final product.

Sloppy Work

Get what you pay for

Hurrying through a job saves on labor costs, but leaves you with a less than satisfactory job.  You could wind up with paint spots on your floor or carpet, streaks on the walls from hasty paint application and “spill overs” on your trim or crown molding. Beware of a much lower estimate than expected.  That could be a tipoff that you are not going to get quality work.

Get What You Pay For

Meet in person

A lot of people are in a hurry and ask for an estimate over the phone.  A true professional will need to look at the project to determine things such as the best paint for the project, the number of coats of paint it will take, the type and extent of prep work is involved, and how long the project will take.  They will take time to listen to your expectations and answer all your questions.  There should be a rapport and feeling that your project is important – because to a true professional it is!.

Ask questions

How can you rest assured that you have made a good decision about your hire?  After you go over the project and an estimate has been submitted, ask a few more questions for clarification.

How long will my project take?  When can you begin?  Some contractors will offer a small incentive if you are flexible with scheduling.  Are you licensed and insured? A reputable painting contractor will have the appropriate state licensing and insurance.  What is your guarantee? Besides guarantees for paints and products supplied by the manufacturers, a true professional will guarantee all aspects of the project and return until the client is satisfied.

Final thoughts

My friend told me all about his regrets with the painter he hired.  I really wish I could have run into him earlier.  Finally, he told me he was thinking about getting his exterior painted.  So I gave him my card!
