Creating curb appeal is a source of pride for your family – after all, that is where you spend most of your time. It also adds great value – experts say up to 11%, so return in your investment of time and money really pays off. Here is a checklist of things you can do to add curb appeal…

Increasing your home's value

Where to Start – Creating Curb Appeal

* Paint the exterior of your home. Creating curb appeal starts with a fresh coat of paint. This is the big game changer for making your home look and feel brand new.  A fresh coat of paint that protects and enhances the curb appeal of your home may be just what you need to wake up a boring exterior. Best of all – an exterior paint job can last for years! Choosing exterior colors for your home is fun and exciting, but you may want a little guidance to choose the colors that are right for your home and the look you want to achieve.

And while your at it… Don’t put up your old house numbers once your house is painted  – updating your house numbers is  quick and easy and adds a lot of bang for your buck!  You can also put new hardware on your front door and buy a new welcome mat for your entry way. Let us hang your numbers and install your door hardware.

Next Steps

*Manicure your lawn. Cut the grass and edge the driveway and walkway. Pull weeds and add a bed of mulch (pine straw, bark nuggets, wood chips). Trim the shrubs or pull them up if they are old and overgrown. Always water your lawn sufficiently for your area.  It is better to water deeply once or twice per week than just water a little every day.

Believe it or not, there is even green lawn spray paint (what will they think of next) if your lawn needs a boost!  Also, consider mowing your lawn in different patterns each time you mow.  This can create an interesting and intriguing look.

*Tend your flower beds and plant some new annuals or perennials to add a pop of color. Consider the style of your home when you get ready to select plants. If you have a modern home you may take a minimalist approach, but if you have a cottage-style or informal home a country-style, casual garden would be perfect.  Your local garden center can help you make your selection, so be sure to take pictures of your home and the area you want to landscape before you go.

*Wash windows inside and out. Nowadays, many homes have tilt-in windows and that makes the job easier. If not, clean the inside and use your garden hose to rinse down the outside. When using a ladder, do so with care. Adding window boxes can up your curb appeal and give an interesting look that not many homes have.

Easy DIY Ideas

*Install a new mailbox or paint and landscape the one you have if it is in good shape. Make sure you have the complete look when you are done.

*Update your light fixtures by shopping around and seeing what is current. Most home centers have a good selection without breaking the bank. Go to yard sales or estate sales (even if you go on-line!), and be on the lookout for interesting fixtures that can be updated with crystals, paints or other adornments. If you DIY, make sure you cut off the electricity to the fixtures before you begin. As a low-cost alternative, take down your current fixtures and spray paint them black.
