Have you ever asked yourself, “What time of year should I paint my house?” Maybe not. Most people don’t really think about the pros and cons of when to paint the interior or exterior of their home. One day you may be walking around your home doing a little yard work and look up at the fading shutters and dulling finish on your house. Your yard looks great…your house, not so much. You’re thinking, “When was the last time this house was power washed and painted? It’s time to paint! We’re having guests next week for the holidays… I better get on it!”
WHY PAINT IN THE FALL (AND LATE SUMMER)
Summers here in SC are typically hot and dry. As fall arrives (September and October) the weather cools a bit. Paint should be applied to a dry surface, making this an ideal time for exterior painting. Also, events and holidays come at you fast once September 1 arrives. If you paint in August, you’ll be ready for the Labor Day cookout and the pictures by the front door for the first day of school. If you paint in September you will be ready to invite friends and family for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas as your guests enjoy being entertained in your freshly painted home.
OTHER TIMES TO PAINT
If holidays are not your main consideration and you would rather wait until you have some off time from work, November and sometimes December can be a consideration. Most people don’t think about exterior painting in the winter, but nowadays modern paints are formulated to allow you to paint in temperatures as low as 35 degrees. Painting time may be limited, say between 9:00 – 2:00 to paint when it is sunny. This may add a day or two onto the job.
Following the winter months, spring always brings thoughts of renewal and spring cleaning and clean up. This is a really busy time for painters. If you plan ahead and call for estimates in late January or February you can probably pick your paint slot for March or April. Temperatures are not too extreme and you’ll be ready by the time school gets out and you are ready to entertain outdoors. Also, you will want to paint before you begin other outdoor projects. Paint before you begin landscaping and mulching so as not to disturb new plants/mulch products.
If summer is the most convenient time of year for you, call at the end of spring to book for June, July or August. The majority of people consider this the best and most convenient time to paint due to weather conditions. It is true that the warm, dry weather allows for proper paint adhesion and a smooth finish. Additionally, dry weather conditions can help prevent issues like cracking, peeling or bubbling due to excess moisture.

READY TO PAINT?
If you are ready to paint the next step is to call a few reputable house painting companies to get some estimates. Once you have decided on a company, the negotiation for a time slot begins. Negotiation?? You would like them to start ASAP, of course, only to find out they have several booking ahead of you. This is typical of respectable paint companies. You may get lucky if they have a cancellation or postponement. Or maybe they are painting an exterior and the weather is not cooperating (and you have an interior job). That is why it is important to think ahead.
Holidays are a time when homeowners want their homes to look their best! NOW, is a great time to call if you want to book your job for the end of August or September. Interior house painting can be done year round since the climate/temperature is controlled. But fall is rapidly approaching and and that is a great time to paint! Unfortunately, if you don’t plan ahead the great painting companies will be all booked up.
Regardless of the time of year, our team approaches your project with dedication and attention to detail. Let us consult with you, understand your vision, recommend quality paints suitable for your project and execute the process efficiently and effectively.
