WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT FOR …
And just like that…2023 is winding down! Have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet? Some may be about your health and fitness, some about work (or maybe not!) and some about home and family. Whatever your resolutions are, maybe we can help out with the resolutions pledging to spruce up your home and feathering your nest. But where to start? Well, design trends are just that – trends. Designers help the public keep up with changing times, but it is not necessary to change everything at once. Look over the up and coming “What’s hot” ideas and decide what appeals to your taste and style. In fact, putting your own stamp on things is what makes your home yours.
WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT IN KITCHEN DESIGN
Kitchen cabinets are shifting away from white cabinets in favor of wood grain, particularly white oak, or cabinets in bold colors. It is important to note that white cabinets are classic and timeless. However, you can easily update them by painting them in a vibrant color rather than replacing all your cabinet – which can be cost prohibitive. If you live with them a while and really prefer white cabinets, you can always paint them back to white! If you have your heart set on wood cabinets there are a wide variety of choices. There are a number of oak options, but also consider maple, hickory, cherry and birch. Wood can be very pricey, so be sure to do your research before you make a final decision.
Kitchen counters are featuring quartz, quartz, quartz (or quartzite) as opposed to granite, marble or laminate – if changing countertops in in your future. This is largely due to the color selection, scratch resistance and durability. And, while we’re talking about counter space…beverage stations for coffee, smoothies or a wine bar are becoming popular. Look around for styles and ideas that will work in your kitchen.
One last thing… Statement hoods are in! They are not only functional, they are beautiful, too. Range hoods come in tons of choices. And the great news is that there are some for every budget.
WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT IN LIVING AREAS
Another surprising trend is the move from wide open spaces to smaller, more intimate areas. Think traditionally divided homes. Think cozy. Now, if you are not in the market for a new home, there is not a whole lot you can do about the layout of your home short of major wall additions and renovations. But… there are lots of tricks and tips to achieve the concepts of intimate and cozy.
- Rearrange your furniture – Simply by turning backs of chairs and sofas to other spaces immediately signals separate areas. If you have a sectional sofa, they are perfect for this
- Add area rugs – Adding area rugs is a great way to define areas. Just be sure they fit the space and are not too large or small
- Introduce a folding screen – These can add both color and pattern to help define space. Even better, they can be folded and put away if you need more space for entertaining
- Use a bookcase between areas – They also add more storage and interest to the room
- Use paint – Strategically choosing colors and painting walls can create a visual barrier for each area
WHAT’S HOT AND WHAT’S NOT IN OTHER TRENDS
Minimalism has been the trend, but the move towards maximalism – without messiness – is in. Don’t over accessorize, but vintage, up-cycled and bold accessories add to the coziness of the room. For upholstery and window treatments checkerboard patterns, stripes and plaids are popular. Colors and wallpaper are back in a big way, too.
As far as lighting goes, think sculptural chandeliers, wall sconces and ceiling lights and fixtures made of natural materials like wicker, rattan and leather. Understated up-lighting behind furniture or floor plants can add interest and ambiance.
Have fun with your home designs! Remember, great designs start with the right back drop. Before you begin redecorating – select some beautiful colors that project your style and paint your rooms. You don’t want to rearrange, refurnish and realize the walls look faded and worn.
