Staining a fence can give your yard a whole new look. Just like painting the exterior (or interior) of your house, it provides a fresh, new, cared-for look that enhances your curb appeal and maintains the integrity of the structure. You can also paint a fence, but we recommend stain due to its durability on wood that is exposed to the elements. You should have your fence stained every 2-3 years to preserve the function and look of the wood.
PREPARATION
Preparation for any paint project is key to a perfect outcome. It is important to make sure you have everything you need before you start. This will ensure that things go smoothly. So what is needed?
Stain (or paint) – Choose your color (or opt for a transparent stain). A premium acrylic specifically formulated for exterior wood will perform better than an oil-based stain.
Power washer – Fences should be thoroughly cleaned by power washing a day or two before staining. Allowing the wood to dry will prevent moisture from getting trapped under the stain.
Brushes, rollers, spray equipment – It is possible to brush or roll on the stain, but a sprayer will provide more even coverage and is much more efficient. Brushes should be used to backbrush any dripping paint. Also, smooth over areas that need it due to wood inconsistencies. Use a brush or rollers to paint 2 X 4’s or supporting boards.
Drop cloths, plastic sheeting – If you have plants or shrubs next to your fence it is important to throw a protective cover over them if you are spraying. Also, if there is any wind be sure use something to prevent spray from spotting nearby objects.
Working with the weather – Obviously, rain will delay your project. Best to wait for a day that is warm and dry with little or no wind.
STAINING A FENCE STEP-BY-STEP
Step 1 – Pressure wash fence and allow to dry 24 to 48 hours.
Step 2 – Spread out all tools and materials that will be needed. Cover any plants or objects that may be splashed with stain.
Step 3 – Apply stain in an even manner, taking time to check for drips or spots that may have been missed.
Step 4 – Do a final inspection of the fence and then remove coverings. Allow 4 – 12 hours for stain to dry.
Step 5 – Thoroughly clean all materials to preserve them for future use.
