Ever thought about refinishing the wrought iron railings on your front or back porch? Sometimes it really pays to give attention to the little things. When your railings are rusted and pock marked they tend to give your home a shabby look. Don’t be that house in the neighborhood. Here’s a look at what it takes to bring your rusty rails – or furniture – looking great again.
What a difference an update makes!
THE PROCESS
Refinishing wrought iron can be a tedious and time consuming process, especially if you are doing it for the first time. Plus, there are a lot of supplies you need to gather before you get started. For example, wire brushes, sand paper, deglosser or some sort of cleaning agent, rags, bucket, rollers and paint brushes, rusty metal primer and the finishing coat. You may also opt to use a drill with wire brush attachments to aid in removing loose paint, rust and hard to remove chips. Even so, not every particle will be removed.
What is Involved
Wipe down wrought iron with your cleaning agent
Thoroughly remove as much ols paint as possible
Wipe away any dust and be sure the surface is clean
Apply rusty metal primer with small rollers and brushes. Allow 24 hours to dry.
Apply a coat of your chosen color and finish
Depending on the length of your rails and intricacy of any designs, this process takes several days of hard work. Be prepared to invest your time if you take this on DIY.
THE FINAL PRODUCT
There was a time when people were tearing out their wrought iron and replacing it with other materials that appeared more modern. Actually wrought iron is classic and never goes out of style. It develops character over time. Also, wrought iron furniture for your patio or deck always looks elegant and classy.
Don’t forget, you don’t have to go with black or white for your wrought iron railings or accents. Although those are the most popular choices you can choose a color that compliments the rest of your decor and go for it! When the work is completed – either by you or by professionals – sit back, relax and enjoy.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Again. while refinishing and repainting wrought iron is not exceedingly difficult, it does require the intensive and proper preparation and materials to get the job done right. Just like painting your home, it can be a DIY job if you have the skill and knowledge or you are willing to learn and take the time necessary to complete the job. Just a thought though…calling a professional will save your valuable time. Don’t neglect the details of making your home look great!
