Decorating ideas for after you complete your paint project will help you put the finishing touches on your newly-painted home! Freshening up the interior of your home with a new coat of paint on the walls, trim and doors is a great way to inspire you to spruce up your home and create the living space you’ve always wanted – especially since everyone is spending so much more time at home!

But once you’ve had the interior of your home painted, it’s time to put everything back so you can begin enjoying your new look.  Be careful, you don’t want your new look to be crowded or messy.  Minimalism is in and that means only keeping the things you love. So before you begin putting everything back where it was, avoid making these mistakes and create a comfortable and cozy home for your family.

Avoid Overhead Lighting

Instead of overhead lighting, use a variety of table and floor lamps and scatter a few candles (of the scented variety!) around the room.  Coordinate the scents of your candles.  Be sure to change them with the seasons – flowery, light scents for spring, citrus, fruit and herbal for the summer, spicy, cinnamon, apple and pumpkin for the fall, and balsam, candy cane and other seasonal scents for winter. Use “warm” bulbs in your lamps. If you already have overhead lighting, check to see if you can install a dimmer switch to create the ambiance you want.

Decorating Ideas with Plants, plants, plants

Using plants outside is not just for creating curb appeal. Bring the outdoors in with a variety of houseplants.  Not only do they add interest and texture, but they may actually improve air quality.  We spend about 90% of our time indoors on the average, so why not brighten things up with a variety of plants? There are plenty of plants that are easy to tend indoors and decorating with plants can be fun and easy. They also create an interesting diversion from the usual wall art or mirrors.

Use plants as a great decorating ideas.

Be creative by bringing the outdoors in!

 Avoid overcrowding your shelves

While it may be tempting to pack your shelves with books, pictures and curios, be sure to leave some empty space between items.  Games, electronics, DVD’s etc, are best stored in drawers or closets. If you must have those items out, consider storing them in decorative baskets.  When you have arranged your shelves or bookcases, step back and make sure you have created a pleasing effect with the items you care about most!

Too much color / too many pillows

When we think of decorating we often think about putting things on the walls, but color comes from other objects, too. The general rule of thumb is 60%, 30%, 10%Of course, the 60% will be your wall color and that sets the tone for the rest of your choices. The next 30% will be the colors in your furniture or drapes.  The final 10% will be your accent pieces.  While all these puzzle pieces may seem like they incorporate only 3 colors, remember that there are many variations within one color family.

A word to the wise…pillows can provide a interesting pop of color, but you can have too many. A lot depends on the size of your sofa and how much seating room you want.  Large, overstuffed pillows take up a lot of room and can actually make guests uncomfortable.  Buy all the pillows you want, but be sure to keep the receipts and know your stores return policy.  Experiment with them when you get home and see what works best for you.

Furniture placement

The final piece of the puzzle is getting your furniture in an aesthetically pleasing arrangement.  Step one is finding the focal point.  That may be the fireplace, the television or a large window with a panoramic view, so you’ll want to arrange your furniture around that.

Don’t push your furniture up against the walls.  Even if your room is small, allow some space between the wall and the back of the piece you are placing.  Believe it or not, this will make you room appear larger.  The larger your room the more space you can allow.

Finally, you will want to create conversation areas. In other words, place furniture pieces so that people can converse without having to strain or change position.  Keeping that in mind, try not to put one chair alone.  If your room is large, consider creating two conversation areas.  Once you have decided on your seating arrangement, place side tables and coffee tables in easy-reaching distance.  Now, step back and make sure your arrangement appeals to you! Really, these are just helpful hints and guideline, but your home is your castle!
