Painting the exterior of your home is not something you should neglect, especially if it has been more than 8 – 10 years. One important aspect of choosing colors for your home is choosing a front door paint color. Why is this important? It adds curb appeal, creates a beautiful new look and makes a statement about who you are. Wondering what popular colors for your front door say about you? Check out this post from pro.com.
BEFORE YOU START
Consider neighborhood covenants and restrictions, ride around and see what’s out there, look around and see what other colors you have surrounding your home – plants, concrete, pavers, etc. Also, is your front door covered by a porch? You may want to use a light color. If the porch cover is shallow, you are wide open for any color. If you are thinking about a darker color, only use the color on your door. Your trim and body (door) color should be different to create a focal point.
Cruise your neighborhood and other neighborhoods for homes that you admire. Look at all the front doors and how they blend or contrast with the exterior colors or finishes (brick, cedar siding, etc.). You can get some great ideas of things you like or dislike just by looking!
DON’T BE AFRAID OF COLOR
When you get right down to it, most front doors are white. There is nothing wrong with white, especially if you have chosen bright colors for the rest of your home. Other neutrals you may want to consider are brown, black or gray. Deep red or navy blue have also become very popular and can function as neutrals, as well. These are all great choices. However, if you are feeling bold an orange, yellow or green can make a great statement and draw the eye to your entrance. If you are a little nervous about going too bold, try a deeper shade of these colors. If you have a storm door you may want to consider painting the trim of the door in a contrasting hue for an added punch of color and interest.
DON”T PICK YOUR COLORS INDOORS
After you have several ideas for your front door take a trip outside in the sunlight to get a true feeling of what the color will look like. You can tape color swatches to the door for several days and observe what it looks like rain or shine. You can purchase paint samples and paint swatches on the door. Stand back and look at the colors from several angles.
Choosing a Front Door Color – FINAL THOUGHTS
Remember, your home is your personal retreat, so trust your own judgement about what fits your personality. Friends, family and neighbors will feel welcomed into your home and you will feel happy to come home everyday. Door color is easily changed if you change your mind over time.
