HANG A MIRROR BEHIND A LAMP

If your room lacks natural light or your are entertaining in the evening, place a lamp in front of a hanging mirror to provide reflective light and ambiance. This trick dates back hundreds of years to a time when royal palaces featured a room or hall of mirrors for entertaining.  This allowed for a fraction of the number of candles to light the room and thus cut back on accidental fires while creating a glowing and intimate atmosphere.  Of course, we don’t have the same problems as royalty, but we can take a page from their decorating book!

USE A WHEELBARROW FOR A PLANTER (OR A COOLER!)

decorating and entertaining hack # 3

Getting ready to entertain outdoors?  Scour garages sales, estate sales and even you own storage shed for a wheelbarrow that no longer serves that purpose.  USE IT, DON’T LOSE IT… Here are 2 great ideas.

  • Drill a few drainage holes in the bottom, fill it with dirt and plant your favorite outdoor plants.  Don’t forget one or two that will cascade of the sides.
  • Lightly sand off any rust and wipe it clean.  Use Rust-Oleum spray paint in the color of your choice. Let it dry and cure thoroughly before using.  If so desired, line with plastic then just fill with ice and beverages and enjoy!  For more uses for you wheelbarrow see some great ideas from Country Living.

GET CREATIVE WITH YOUR HEADBOARD

Does your bedroom need an update to become the oasis you dream of?  Start by reimagining your headboard.  You can simply sand and repaint it if it is wood – and don’t be afraid to choose color!  Repurpose an old wooden door, use tiles or find a big piece of wall art to fool the eye.  Or, mount a curtain rod and hang curtains for a faux headboard look.

HANG A BUNCH OF EUCALYPTUS IN YOUR SHOWER

decorating and entertaining hack # 5

Ahhh… the fragrance of eucalyptus.  It is so refreshing and clean.  Gather or purchase a bunch of eucalyptus, tie it with a decorative bow and hang it over the shower head.  The steam from the shower will release the fragrance.  Check out this post from The Cut to see details of how to enhance the fragance of eucalyptus in your bath – and relax!

FILL YOUR FIREPLACE WITH LOGS

decorating and entertaining hack # 6 If you don’t use your fireplace or it is not a working fireplace, filling it with cut logs is a great alternative.   Create interesting patterns with the size and shape of the logs.  Finish it off by placing an eye-catching decorative item in front, like the lantern pictured.  Or try and arrangement/assortment of candles that can be lit when you want candlelight ambiance!

Decorating and entertaining in your home should be fun and exciting.  Your friends will not know what to expect next when they visit your home.  They may even “copycat” but remember – Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
