Summer checklist? Summer is almost over! Wait a minute, no it’s not…believe me. We still have several months of warm, sunny weather here in the south and plenty of time to take care of things around the house.
As it has been pointed out time and again – your home is the biggest investment you have, so it pays to keep your home and yard in tiptop shape. If you do things regularly around the house it really makes things easier in the long run. Make a plan for getting things done and try to stick to it.
Here are some suggestions to get you started on your Summer Checklist, so walk around you home and see what really needs to be accomplished before cold weather sets in…
Pressure Wash
Mold and mildew take a toll on the appearance of your home, but this is a fairly easy fix. And don’t limit yourself just to pressure washing the house. Do the sidewalks and walkways, decks and docks to truly complete the job. Hire a professional or rent/buy or borrow a pressure washer. Also, if you have teenagers, this is a job they can help with – with a little supervision.
Clean Out Your Gutters
You definitely don’t want leaves, debris and bugs to build up and cause your gutters not to function properly. This can lead to drainage issues and rot. Be safe! Make sure you have a sturdy ladder, gloves to protect your hands, and a scooping tool. When you are finished, rinse the gutter and watch the flow of water to be sure the job is complete.
Wash Windows
This can be a big job, so break it down by going room to room. Do the inside and then the outside before moving on to the next room. Break the job into two or three days, if necessary. If possible, choose a cloudy or overcast day. You can use a commercial cleaner like Windex, or you can make your own (recipe below from Good Housekeeping!). Wipe windows with a microfiber cloth or newspaper.
Homemade Glass Cleaner
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup white or cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol 70% concentration
Combine the ingredients and pour them in a spray bottle. If you have kids or pets, write the ingredients on the outside of the bottle for safety.
Paint
Put a fresh coat of paint on the outside (and the inside, too, if its been a while) – Nothing protects and enhances the beauty of your home like a painting refresh. It creates great curb appeal and adds protection from the elements. Just like an oil change for your car, regular maintenance avoids problems. Fortunately, your home only needs to be painted about every 7 – 10 years.
There are plenty of other things that can be done to maintain your home’s appearance and well-being. Just have a look at this checklist from Homelight for more info.
