After all your home is where you will spend most of your time this year and it can have a major impact on how you feel about yourself and your lifestyle. And it says a lot about you and your family. Why not set some easily attainable goals for 2022 that will renew your commitment to get things done. After all, the New Year is always brimming with possibilities!
Get Your Space Organized
Nothing creates a sense of accomplishment like decluttering and organizing. Plus, it is the best and cheapest way to feel better about your home. Follow these simple hints to get started and fulfill your New Year’s resolutions!
- Do one room at a time and start with the most daunting task. That way you will have the worst of it out of the way when you begin to tire.
- Empty the space as much as possible. Create 3 piles – a pile of things you will keep and/or repurpose, a pile of things to donate or give away, and a trash pile. Be sure to follow through.
- Do a thorough cleaning and vacuuming of the room. Don’t forget windows, sills, baseboards and tops of doors.
- Replace the items you kept or repurpose some of them to other rooms. Use baskets and other creative storage methods to make the room seem less cluttered.
- REMEMBER – one room at a time, one chore at a time so you don’t get overwhelmed!
Create a System for Cleaning
Everyone loves a clean house, but the act of cleaning can be daunting. New year’s Resolutions wouldn’t be complete without a plan to keep your home looking its best. The key to success is to divide tasks in to manageable blocks of time. For instance… Just pick up clutter around the house each day for 20 minutes, then rest, reward yourself, or move onto another task you accomplish in a a small block of time. Devise a daily, weekly and even monthly plan to keep things clean and in order. The plan has to fit YOUR lifestyle, but here are some suggestions:
- Sort through mail and throw out junk – DAILY
- Wash dishes, load dishwasher, wipe surfaces – DAILY
- Pick up clutter, wipe bathroom surfaces – DAILY
- Do laundry (wash, dry, fold, put away!) – WEEKLY
- Clean toilets and tubs – WEEKLY
- Mop, vacuum, dust – EVERY 2 WEEKS
- Deep clean – EVERY 2-3 months
- Make a schedule for special things like cleaning the frig, cabinets and drawers
Create an Outdoor Living Space or Enhance the One You Have
Start now and work through spring. Look around your backyard and scan for items that can be thrown away, repainted, repurposed or just cleaned up and start there. Just do that much.
Begin looking for some outdoor furniture that fits your budget and suits your style. You have plenty of time to look around, visit yard and estate sales and shop on-line for just what you want. Don’t forget the outdoor rug and maybe a bar set-up. The bar set-up could be a rolling bar cart that you can use indoors to entertain, too!
Finally, if you don’t have a patio, deck, or outdoor living area, start saving up to have one installed or design one you can build one yourself. It is an itermediate level project that can be done a little at a time.
Clean and Spruce Up Your Entry Way
This ia a great year to add curb appeal to your home! Start by clearing off your porch or entryway. Sweep and scrub the “flooring”. Wash the front door – paint, if needed and clean any glass. Stand back and decide what would add interest and color to draw the eye to your entrance. Clean and replace any objects that speak to you and visit your local craft store or home goods store to fill in any areas that look empty.
Paint Your Interior and Rearrange Furniture for a Fresh Look
Now that the colors of the year are here it is time to repaint your interior. Just paint your living areas if you don’t have the time or money to redo the whole interior. When you replace your furniture, think about a new arrangement. Check out these simple rules from The Spruce.
